FAQ’S
Lets answer some questions you might have about the different types of security you can use:
Are you tired of throwing away thousands of dollars on a failed security system or guard service?security you can use:
Are un-monitored cameras effective at preventing crime?
Utilizing un-monitored surveillance cameras are often not effective at deterring crime for the following reasons. In most cases all you are left with is a video of a crime after the fact and a police case number. Although at times this video can be essential in solving crimes by providing needed video evidence. It lacks the ability to really deter criminals who are intently trying to commit crime on your property. Cameras that function without human intervention in real time cannot respond or react in a preventative manner.
Think about it…
How effective will a camera be if the criminal wears a hood before entering your property then slips away with no eyewitness?
Are security guards worth the money?
Security guards and patrol programs are a good alternative when the presence of a person is needed. However the human element associated with these programs often falls way short of the expectation you might have for them.
Some security guard companies have adopted a below living wage standard that they use to pay their security guards. In order to drive profits security guard companies can negotiate low billing rates and still make the same percentage of profit. They do this by compensating the guard far less then they deserve.
For this reason security guard companies do not always attract and employ top security guard personnel. However you as a client are always led to believe that the security guard on your property patrolling is fully trained, supervised and dressed for duty.
The truth of the matter is:
- Reports are often hard to read, missing or none existent.
- Some Guards have been known to leave in the middle of their shift.
- Guards sometimes cannot be seen on the property because they are sleeping at home or in their vehicle.
- Guards often miss a lot of information that would be needed by the client.
- Guards invite friends to meet them on the job site.
Are vehicle patrol programs effective at preventing crime?
Vehicle patrols or courtesy patrols as some call them are a reactive form of security. The reason why they are labeled reactive is because they do not actively prevent crime. This is usually due to geography and time constraints. In order for a security agency to make money they have to either charge a large amount of money per client or they must pile numerous client patrol sites on the patrolling guard. You can imagine that placing a large volume of patrols on the guard becomes too hard to complete with in a 10 or 12-hour period of time. This is extremely difficult when every client site is under contract to be patrolled 4 or 5 times per night.
What generally happens because of this scenario is the patrol officer is forced to skip patrols for various clients that are out of the way. Guards are forced to complete their rounds very quickly in order to check the box on their report sheet. They are left with no time to adequately patrol the site for potential criminals or the identification of hazards.
If they do identify a problem it is usually after the fact and the time it takes to deal with it is taken from another client.
The average time a patrol guard takes to complete a round around a client’s property is 5 minutes. This means the officer spends 25 minutes or less on the property within a 10 or 12 hour window. Due to this large gap in coverage the guard usually spends most of the time behind the wheel driving to sites in order to play catch up.
Criminals often take advantage of these gaps by waiting for the guard to leave the site. Once the guard completes the round criminals move in on their opportunity. Since it will be at least 2 ½ hours before the guard returns the criminal has time to execute the plan with one less thing to worry about.
You as a consumer do not always get what you think you are paying for.
